Marie River's dream for the novitiate: Would that I had a thousand bodies to be able to go work all over the world to make Jesus Christ known. -Marie Rivier

Stages in the Formation Process

1. Come and See (Matt. 19:21)
This is a time of inquiry and discernment: Am I called?

Discernment involves mutual listening and conversation. During this time you will live independently as you take a closer look at religious life as a life choice. You will spend time with a community of sisters and journey with a spiritual director as you move towards making a formal application.

2. Pre-Postulancy
This is a time for you to live with the sisters in a community and to experience life with members of the Congregation. Together, we continue discerning your call to this particular Congregation. It is a time of mutual knowledge, of deepening of faith, of human, affective and sexual maturity.

3. Postulancy
As you live with the sisters for six months to one year, you will receive some formal teachings you will gain a deeper knowledge of the spirit of the Congregation and its mission. It is a time for exploring the question of religious life, a time of testing the call to a religious vocation, a time for building community, which includes living and working with other sisters.

4. As a Novice in the Novitiate
This is a focused experience of prayer, study of religious life and the vows, a study of the history and traditions of the Congregation. You will be given the time necessary to deepen and integrate your life of contemplation and mission. During the first year of the two-year program, you live in Novitiate house with the Sisters in Saskatoon, SK Canada.

This is a time of formation of the heart. We contemplate Mary in the mystery of her Presentation in the Temple. As daughters of Mary we are called to “carry the fire of the love of God and the knowledge of Jesus Christ everywhere.” -Marie Rivier. During the second year you will be involved in ministry experiences while living in a community with Sisters.

5. Initial Commitment– Temporary Vows
Initial Commitment is when you make your first vows as a Sister of the Presentation of Mary. These vows are usually for a 4 to 6 year period. During these years you live community as a Sister of the Presentation. You come to know us as an International Congregation.

Every three years the young Sisters of Canada and the United States meet to share their dreams and aspirations. You continue human, religious and professional development, participate in ministry and discern with the Congregation your readiness for permanent commitment as a Sister of the Presentation of Mary.

6. Permanent Commitment
As a preparation for final vows, the Congregation offers an International experience in Rome. When you vow chastity, poverty and obedience in community for mission, you make a lifetime commitment to dedicate your entire being to God.

“To know Jesus Christ in the Gospel, to live Jesus Christ in his mysteries, to reveal and to teach Jesus Christ by your whole life: such is our vocation.” -Constitution of the Sisters of Presentation of Mary.

7. Ongoing Formation
After several years of apostolic activity, the Congregation grants us a time of retreat, inviting us to step back and, before God, to reflect upon our commitment. Throughout life we are careful to make good use of the means offered us by the Community to perfect our religious and professional education. All the formation received in the course of our life will have prepared us to welcome the grace of our retirement from active life brought about by age and diminishing strength -Constitutions
